3 Reasons to Skip Opening Gifts at Kids' Birthday Parties (And How to Handle It)

Picture this: your child is surrounded by their giggling friends, eagerly ripping off wrapping paper from a birthday gift. Suddenly, their face drops as they look at you with disappointment. "Another [fill in the blank]?!" It's a cringe-worthy moment every parent dreads. After witnessing this scene play out too many times, I made a firm rule - no opening presents in front of guests at kids' birthday parties. Here's why we avoid this tradition, even as my children have gotten older:

1. Young children often lack the developmental ability to graciously thank the gift giver in front of a crowd. Their unfiltered emotions show clearly on their faces, making duplicate or unwanted gifts awkward for all. While gratitude is important to learn, there are better approaches than public gift opening.
2. It's tough on the birthday guests, too! Little hands impatiently want to play with newfound toys. And enviously watching one friend open multiple presents is difficult for young partygoers. Even parents can feel gift comparison creeping in.
3. Many hosts open gifts simply to fill time, but it often becomes the party's most stressful moment. You're juggling recording gifts/givers, disposing wrapping paper, and containing antsy kids - hardly a relaxing celebration!

Over the years, I've made some exceptions by privately allowing the birthday child to open one special gift after the party from a best friend excited to see their reaction. But in general, I recommend the following:

1. Discuss expectations with your child beforehand about not opening birthday gifts during their party. Practice polite responses together.
2. If asked, simply explain "We'd rather spend our time celebrating with you today! Gift opening happens later."
